Applied on press with a blanket, low cost water-based aqueous coatings provide good protection from fingerprints and setoff. Because they seal the ink from the air, aqueous coatings can help prevent metallic inks from tarnishing. At the same time, however, the coatings are susceptible to a chemical reaction, or burning, which can cause unwanted color shifts. Light tints of colors—made using a 25% screen or less—are especially prone to burning.
