A Different Vein.

This image was created by applying color with a heavy hand. A solid black shadow area was transformed into sky blue. The platelets were outlined and skewed to an intense red, leaving only the top end of the highlights free from ink.

Beginning with the grayscale image in all four channels, a curve adjustment was used to create the background color, while a layer mask was used to paint out the blood cells. Then the mask was inverted and used for the blood cells. The orange in the image was created using both adjustment layers and a color layer to achieve the saturation and contrast.
